What Is Land Navigation? How the Six-Point Checklist Works

A beginner-friendly guide to land navigation tools, techniques, terrain, common mistakes, and the checklist that helps you plan before you move.
Where did Six Point Survival get its name? I'm glad you asked. Six Point is actually what we used to teach navigation when it was time to start moving. For land navigation, you make a plan before you go. That plan is a navigation checklist or a six-point checklist. This is what we used to teach military members how to successfully navigate at SERE School.
The checklist is:
1. Heading
2. Distance
3. Pace count
4. Terrain evaluation
5. Point description
6. ETA/WTF
The last part stands for estimated time of arrival and “way too far,” giving you a way to recognize when you've gone beyond your point or have been moving in the wrong direction for too long.
While we now apply this checklist to many things in our personal and work lives, it's rooted in having a good plan every time BEFORE you start navigating. Today we're going to discuss broadly what land navigation is and how it works.

What Is Land Navigation?
Land navigation is the process of determining where you are, identifying where you need to go, choosing a route, and moving across the terrain to reach your destination, ideally as safely and efficiently as possible.
To understand and successfully execute land navigation, you first need to understand the tools required, how to use them, and how they work together. Think map, compass, pen or pencil, protractor, a GPS if you’re lucky, and some good ol’ foot power.
Good navigation comes from following sound principles, trusting your tools, trusting the process, and maintaining discipline. It is easy to start thinking your sense of direction is better than your compass, that the map must be wrong, or to simply get lazy with your movements.
These are all common pitfalls that are easy to avoid, but doing so requires discipline. If you have a long distance to go, typically you'll want to break your journey into multiple shorter routes. If you are just a couple of degrees off heading, you'll end up way off your final point. It's better to find defined points along the way to stay on track.
The Six-Point Navigation Checklist
The six-point checklist gives you a simple way to organize the information you need before moving toward a destination.
Heading
Your heading is the direction you need to travel. Depending on the compass and navigation system you are using, you may hear this called a bearing or azimuth.
The heading gives you direction, which is essential but incomplete. How far you're traveling is next.
Distance
Distance tells you how far the destination is from your starting point. You may measure it from a map, GPS, known trail distance, or another reliable reference. You need to understand whether you are traveling 100 meters, 1 kilometer, or more. And you'll want a way to measure it on the go.
Pace Count
Your pace count helps you estimate how far you have walked. You determine how many paces it takes you to cover a known distance and then use that number while navigating.
Your pace will change with hills, thick vegetation, soft sand, heavy equipment, fatigue, and other conditions. It is not perfect, but it gives you another way to track your movement instead of relying on guesswork. Everyone has their own unique pace count, but think of it like this: for every 75 paces you take, you may have traveled approximately 100 meters.
Terrain Evaluation
Before moving, you should study what lies between you and your destination. Look for hills, valleys, roads, waterways, swamps, cliffs, thick vegetation, buildings, boundaries, and other features that may affect your route. This also tells you along the way if you're still on the correct path. The shortest route on the map is not always the safest or fastest route on the ground. A slightly longer route along easier terrain may save time and reduce the chance of getting lost.
Point Description
Your point description tells you what you are looking for when you arrive. It may be a trail intersection, bridge, hilltop, bend in a creek, road junction, campsite, structure, or marked navigation point. Knowing what the destination should look like helps you recognize it. Without a useful point description, you may reach the correct area and continue walking because you do not realize you are already there.
ETA/WTF
Your estimated time of arrival gives you another way to measure progress. If you expect the route to take 20 minutes and you have been walking for 45, something is probably wrong.
That is where “way too far” comes in. This is giving yourself a backstop that tells you if you've gone to far. For example if 200 meters after your point there is a creek, then that's your WTF point. If you cross the creek, then you've gone too far.
What You Need to Navigate
You do not need every navigation tool ever invented to begin learning. You do need to understand what each tool can and cannot do.

A Map
A map gives you an overhead view of the area. Depending on the map, it may show roads, trails, waterways, elevation, property boundaries, buildings, vegetation, and terrain features.
A topographic map can help you recognize hills, ridges, valleys, saddles, depressions, and other features that affect how you travel. It also helps you compare possible routes before you begin moving.
A compass gives you a reliable directional reference. It helps you orient your map, determine a heading, follow an azimuth, and check whether you are drifting off course.
Baseplate and lensatic compasses accomplish many of the same goals, but they are built and used differently. We will cover those differences in a separate article because trying to teach every compass in one section is how simple subjects become unnecessarily painful.
This little tool helps more than you might imagine. Measuring location (which we will cover in a different blog and YouTube video) isn't necessarily hard, but using a measuring tool like a protractor REALLY helps. This is designed to measure distance on maps and find headings.
Notebook and Pencil
While this isn't technically required equipment, it's extremely helpful. I always write down my Six Point checklist. It helps me limit how often I have to get out my map. It also helps me better understand what terrain I'm about to cover and become familiar with my route BEFORE I take my first step.
GPS and Electronic Navigation
GPS devices and phone apps are useful navigation tools. They can show your location, record your route, provide coordinates, and help you move through unfamiliar areas.
They should support your navigation skills rather than replace them entirely. You don't need to avoid technology, but you should understand enough navigation that losing it doesn't stop you from navigating.
This is again a nice to have, not a requirement. Ranger Beads are a tools use to measure how far you've traveled. They work well with pace count so every time you estimate you've moved 100 meters, you slide a bead. It works like an abacus but for land nav.
How Land Navigation Actually Works
Land navigation becomes easier when you stop treating it like one complicated skill and begin viewing it as a repeatable process.
Determine Where You Are
You need a reliable starting point. That may be a trailhead, road intersection, campsite, known landmark, grid coordinate, GPS location, or recognizable terrain feature.
If your starting position is wrong, every direction and distance calculation that follows may also be wrong.

Identify Where You Need to Go (Heading and point description)
Next, locate your destination. It may be marked on a map, provided as a coordinate, identified by a landmark, or described as a terrain feature.
Make sure you understand what the destination actually is. “Go to the hill” is not especially helpful when the map shows six hills.
Study What Lies Between You and the Destination (Distance)
Look at the terrain before choosing your route. A straight line may cross a swamp, ravine, river, steep slope, private property boundary, or wall of vegetation.
A good navigator does not automatically choose the shortest route. Choose the route that gives you the best combination of safety, speed, visibility, and easy-to-recognize features. Pro tip: avoid swamps! Walking a mile out of the way to avoid a swamp will probably be faster and burn less calories than going through it.
Choose Your Route (Pace count and Terrain evaluation)
You may decide to move directly toward the destination, follow a trail or ridgeline, use a river as a guide, or travel toward an easier-to-find feature before making your final approach.
Determine Direction and Distance
Use your map, compass, coordinates, or known landmarks to determine the direction you need to travel. Then estimate the distance using map scale, pace count, travel time, GPS, or a combination of those methods.
Record the information if the route has multiple legs. It is much easier to follow a plan written in a notebook than to rely on your memory after hiking in the heat for two hours.
Move, Observe, and Confirm
I've found that point-to-point navigation is the most reliable in most environments. You may be required to use dead reckoning or terrain association, but these are more advanced methods and aren't as reliable. Once you begin moving, continue checking your heading, distance, terrain, and surroundings. Do not wait until you reach the end of the route to decide whether you were traveling in the correct direction.
Good navigation is a continuous cycle:
Plan
Move
Observe
Confirm
Correct
If the terrain no longer matches the map, your pace count feels wrong, or you reach a feature you did not expect, stop. Small errors are much easier to correct before they become large ones.
Different Ways to Navigate
You will use different navigation methods depending on the terrain, tools, visibility, and destination. Most routes use more than one method.
Point-to-Point Navigation
Point-to-point navigation means moving from one known location to another. You identify your destination, determine the direction and distance, and then follow the route while checking your progress.
Essentially, you find a point along the heading you're taking, such as a tree. Walk to it and repeat. It is a series of points along the heading toward your final destination. It may be a short movement between visible landmarks or a longer route through wooded terrain.
Dead Reckoning
Dead reckoning is useful when terrain features are limited or visibility is poor. Essentially you keep our your compass and regularly check it.
The weakness of dead reckoning is that small errors accumulate. A minor mistake in your heading or pace count may not matter over 50 meters, but it can place you far from your destination after a long movement. If you're walking in mountainous terrain, it also lends itself to error. Hills pull people down them so it should be avoided if possible.
Terrain Association
Terrain association uses visible features to determine where you are and guide your movement. You may follow a ridgeline, drainage, creek, or any other identifiable features you included in your terrain evaluation.
This method helps you navigate without staring at your compass every few steps. It also gives you recognizable features that can confirm whether you are still on the correct route.
Handrails and offsets
A handrail is a feature you can follow, such as a road, river, trail, fence line, or any other linear feature.
Offsetting is intentionally going slightly off your heading. Say you're navigating to a three-way intersection. If you head directly toward it and are off, you're going to hit the road but won't know which way the actual intersection is. If you deliberately offset to one side, say the left, you'll know to turn right when you reach the road.
GPS-Assisted Navigation
GPS-assisted navigation combines traditional navigation skills with electronic tools. You can use GPS to confirm your location, measure distance, record a track, or identify coordinates while still reading the terrain and planning the route yourself.
The goal is not to prove you can navigate without technology. The goal is to use every appropriate tool without becoming completely dependent on one of them.
Why Terrain Matters
Land navigation takes place on the ground, not on a piece of paper.
A map may show a clean, straight line between you and your destination, but the actual route may include steep slopes, waist-deep water, thick vegetation, loose rock, private property, or another obstacle you do not want to cross.
You should constantly compare the map to the ground and the ground to the map. If the map shows a ridge on your left and a creek on your right, you should expect to see those features while moving.
Terrain also helps you correct mistakes. If you know a road runs north to south and you unexpectedly reach it while traveling east, that road gives you information about where you may be.
The better you become at reading terrain, the less you will depend on blindly following a compass heading.
Common Navigation Mistakes
Treating the Compass Like a GPS
A compass points north. That's it. We have other tools to figure out where we're going, but the compass doesn't know if you went off course. It isn't going to update or reroute if/when you get off course.
Failing to Confirm the Starting Point
If you begin from the wrong location, a perfectly measured heading can take you confidently in the wrong direction. This is really where a GPS does the most good.
Choosing the Straightest Route
The shortest route may cross difficult or unsafe terrain. Route selection should account for obstacles, elevation, visibility, and features that make the route easier to follow.
Ignoring Distance
Traveling in the correct direction is only useful if you know when to stop. Track distance with pace count, time, terrain, or another reliable method. Make a backstop and use it. I can't count how many times I've had groups of students blow right past their point and keep walking...sometimes for hours, not realizing that their point was long behind them.

Staring at the Compass
If you're using point-to-point you should only need to look at it when you've reached your point. You also need to watch the terrain, avoid hazards, identify landmarks, and notice whether your surroundings match the map.
Blindly following or Over-Relying on technology
A phone can show your position, but that does not mean it will choose the safest route. You still need to understand the terrain, distance, weather, boundaries, and conditions around you. You can also lose service, batteries can die, or one wrong setting can ruin your trip and get you lost.
Waiting Too Long to Admit Something Is Wrong
If the terrain does not match, your travel time is too long, or you have reached your “way too far” point, stop. Continuing forward because you are emotionally committed to the route usually makes the correction harder.
How to Start Practicing
Begin somewhere safe, controlled, and familiar. You do not need to disappear into a national forest to practice your first compass bearing.
A backyard, park, campground, school field, or marked trail system can give you plenty of room to learn basic skills. Start by identifying north, taking a short bearing, estimating distance, and moving between visible points.
Practice one skill at a time before combining them. Learn how to hold and read the compass, then practice following a heading. Learn your pace count on measured terrain, then test how it changes on hills, sand, or uneven ground.
Once those skills feel comfortable, build short point-to-point routes. Have someone place markers in a controlled area, record the heading and distance to each one, and see whether you can find them.
Practice during daylight before trying night navigation or thick terrain. Carry communication, remain inside a known boundary, and tell someone what you are doing.
The goal is to build confidence through repetition, not create an emergency while practicing emergency skills.
Final Thoughts
Land navigation is not one skill. It is a collection of skills that help you answer three questions: Where are you? Where are you going? How will you know you are getting there?
Your map helps you understand the area. Your compass helps you manage direction. Terrain helps you confirm your position. Pace count, distance, and time help you measure progress.
The six-point checklist brings those pieces together by giving you a heading, distance, pace count, terrain evaluation, point description, and ETA/WTF before you begin moving.
That checklist is where Six Point Survival began, but the principle applies far beyond a navigation course. Plan before you move, pay attention while you move, and stop to reassess when the information around you no longer matches the plan.
